Northwest skateboarder Mark Conahan has seen a lot of skateboarding in his years. From his initial inspiration with images and stories of the Z boys in his youth to homemade backyard ramps and bowlriding of the 70’s skatepark era, Mark was hooked and addicted to the culture of skateboarding forever. Like many of us, he held skateboarding close and followed its cycle of growth, progression, and death. In the 80’s he created and distributed a couple of zines by the name of Bodyslam and penned a collection of skate comics that also appeared within the early issues of Thrasher too.
Fast forward to the present and you’ll discover that Mark is still riding (more like shredding) that “child’s toy” in his late forties. For several years strong, he continues to deliver his personalized skate comics from his past and present experiences where many of them are laced with cynicism and hilarious “generation gap” inspired scenarios. These illustrative portrayals are a prefect recipe highlighting the changes, for better or worse, that have occurred within skateboarding’s culture over the past decade and these comics are regularly updated to his website, Antigravity Press.
Fortunately for us, the first 100 of MC’s skate comics have been compiled into a self-published book titled, Hopeless Old Men On Skateboards - Volume 1. HOMOS is inspired by Conahan’s local skate scene in Portland, Oregon along with his circle of friends and their efforts to get public skateparks built by Dreamland and Grindline, etc. He’s also followed up with a Volume 2 book for comics 101-200 as well as a children’s picture book titled, Hugo and That Dumb Skateboard.
Each of these books are available for purchase right here through lulu.com. Have a look and buy a couple of them. They make for really fun, unique, and affordable gifts as well!
