Why Wouldn’t You?
58 Minutes (plus bonus footage)
Filmed, Edited and Produced by Dave Hupp
In production for several years, Northwest skater and filmer Dave Hupp has recently put forth his first full-length skate video titled, “Why Wouldn’t You?” and it reveals plenty of visual gems of skate goodness for us to witness with a selection of half a dozen of Portland, Oregon’s beloved and die hard skaters. Featured parts include: Josh Falk, Brent Atchley, Lil John aka Wildcard, Ben Krahn, Mark “Red” Scott and Mikey Chin with lots of supportive action from their friends, Burnside locals and other lesser known rippers.
If you’re a street skating purist, well, this video is not exactly the one you’re looking for, but if you want to look into a slice of the many, many, heated sessions at Burnside and beyond by these guys and their cohorts, look no further. Why Wouldn’t You truly delivers on that front. Yes, there’s street footage, but don’t expect any buttery ledge action, handrail hammers, or sizeable gaps from this one. Instead you’ll see some rugged and rigged up spots of the Rose City peppered in with original stunts from Barcelona as well.
To date, there’s no other skate video out there with so much gnarly skate footage of Mark Scott. We’re certain that he’s too busy skating and building skateparks to bother with filming a part for a video. He’s a lifer and a beast on a skate mission and to see him annihilate Burnside while wrapped up in a Superman costume on Halloween is well worth the price of this video alone. But that’s not all. Hupp also captured Red’s loop attempt at Hailey, Idaho and his padless assaults on other concrete parks of his creation. Toss in a couple of backyard pools and the Dreamland warlord’s attack on his private mammoth-sized bowl and you quickly understand his heaviness. Damn!
Overall, the footage is shot well, but the editing is where I feel Why Wouldn’t You could’ve used some guidance and help. The lengthy 58 minutes of footage could’ve been creatively trimmed down to about 35 minutes of the best stuff. There’s certainly plenty of it. Perhaps some of the edited clips could’ve been included in the Bonus section where it features random outtakes, and the construction and first runs at Lincoln City’s newly completed snake run.
Drop into your local skate shop or order it directly through Dave Hupp’s site to get your hands on a personal copy for your collection. The reason is simple enough….why wouldn’t you?
