Jerry Mraz went postal and mailed a copy of Coda’s self-titled DVD to our mailbox. We checked it out and truthfully, it’s one of those self-made skate videos that gets you hyped to skate. And that’s the real point of a skate video right? Why watch something that might be overproduced, very lengthy and in the end, leaves you feeling uninspired. Well, the Coda video delivers close to 25 minutes of heavy skating with its formidable team of hellions that include Pat Smith, Jerry Mraz, Lurker Lou Sarowsky, Conor Fay, Jay Burton, Dave Mitchael and Ricky Espinoza. A bonus section features over 10 minutes of additional footage with recognized and unfamiliar friends, park footage with Jay and Dave, Coda’s Japanese street pirate Youji Watanabe and flow team rider Mark Weeks.
Overall the skating is rugged, entertaining, and tried and true on many of the East Coast’s street spots, skate zones and secret locations. The title treatments are creative and it’s apparent that the video was produced on a shoestring budget. Not that that’s a bad thing, in fact, it’s great to see in the DIY effort with this skate video. Skateboarding needs more of these smaller projects to keep the big guys in check and maintain an example and connection to the heart and soul of skateboarding. If skateboarding evolved to become a league-centric sport we would’ve all quit long ago.
So do yourself a favor and stop by the Coda site to pick up a copy of the video for your library and have a look at their team pages and selection of skate goods while you’re at it. Good to go!
