Despite skateboarding’s mass appeal to a wide range of enthusiasts these days, the majority of travel bags out there in the skateboard market generally don’t accommodate fuller sized skateboards or multiple completes for skate trips. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but none of them quite step up to the capacity demands for larger boards of extra length or width. What happens when you decide to go on that secret pipe, pool, or skatepark mission out of town? You’re kind of left in the dust without a functional bag to transport your larger board and extra gear. For the street purists, the same dilemma applies with some of the wider “filmer” boards.
Well, the dudes at Old Man Army have designed and produced a travel bag that you just might be looking for. It’s roomy and rightfully called the Body Bag. This beast is exceptionally big with plenty of space for wider and longer decks, your helmet, pads, extra tees, wheels, sleeping bag, bolt cutters, extension cords, water bottles and whatever you need to get the job done. Specifically, the Body Bag can easy hold three complete decks up to 10.5” wide and 41” long plus clothes, etc. While its not so easy to hide the lenghy size of this bag, the specimen that was sent to us arrived in a camo colorway, so perhaps it would blend in with background at a heated session.
Dimensions, Features and Specs:
This large bag measures in at 43” long, 11” wide and 11” high. It’s constructed of durable rubber backed polyester with heavy duty sailmakers’ stitching and thread, ample padding, rugged YKK marine grade zippers and stainless steel hardware too. The liner is made of Lucky Star PVC impregnated tarpaulin and helps to maintain its shape and roominess. There are two removable pockets for extra wheels or tools that attach with Velcro (YKK “Quiclon”) to the bag’s interior ends. Two additional non-removable pockets, are included as well, one the exterior and one along the interior opening panel. Interior nylon straps with fastec clips hold extra boards in place on the bottom and sides of the bag while on the road or in the air. The exterior nylon straps have been fitted with padded sleeves for both comfort and ease while carrying over your shoulder or with your clutched hand.
One of the more simple yet thoughtful features on this bag is found with the two zippered enclosures beneath the bag. These optional openings allow for your skateboard’s trucks and wheels to poke through so the Body Bag can be utilized as a roller bag. However, upon our testing, the bottom of the bag often rubbed on the wheels due to lack of clearance. This was not a huge problem, but perhaps taller risers would’ve helped to reduce the drag effect.
All in all, the Body Bag is made of solid materials, highly functional and worth every penny of purchase. However, a skate bag like this one scaled down in length to 34”-36” would be the absolute winner in my mind.
Check the Old Man Army site for purchase information of the Body Bag and their network of retail support that might very well stock them in your neck of the woods.
