Vans Neckface AV Era

We were lucky enough to get our hands on a pair of these Neckface specials on the eve of their release. This was actually my first time lacing up a pair of AV Eras after wearing the originals Eras for a long, long time. I’m sure a lot of people will be buying these up and sticking them in a closet to save the limited Neckface artwork…but I’d rather skate them.

The first thing you notice is the sole. Looks like it’s vulcanized right? Wrong. It’s actually something Vans calls BOARDFEEL technology. It’s a cupsole construction that replicates the feel and grip of their standard vulcanized sole, but it is said to provide more cushioning and support. Interesting.

Slipping them on I do notice they are a bit stiffer than a shoe like the Rowley that has the standard Vulcanized sole. The canvas upper holds a firm shape and the sole just feels more firm on the board. Good or bad thing depending on what you like. Also, the toe box on this shoe is narrow. I’ve worn the same size Vans shoe forever and these are immediately tighter down front. You can see it right away, and you feel it after your first push.

In skating them, the first thing that I notice is how damn sticky they are. They certainly nailed the sticky sole from the original Era. It’s like Velcro. I can certainly feel the difference in flex. I’m sure they will last longer than the Rowleys, but the break in time is going to be a bit longer, like most solid canvas shoes. That being said, I’m sure these will last for more than a few sessions. The Era lives on.
