After sitting and watching an hour and a half (plus bonus minutes) of the colorful scenes that depict the world of Bob Burnquist, I must say that Bob is truly inspiring and one hell of a passionate human being. Meaning, everything Bob sets his mind to, he more or less achieves. His beliefs and vision yield results. Fittingly, this lengthy documentary reveals the dreams and multi-faceted world of a Brazilian skateboarder who came into our industry as an unknown force over a decade ago and unwittingly turned vert skating on its ear. This moment occurred during Slam City Jam in the summer of 1995 and Bob’s skating ability and aptitude has pushed the level of skateboarding for the better and left us in awe ever since. However, his realness has grown far beyond those years of mind-blowing contributions and it’s all packed into this volume of motion picture.
In this film you will understand clearly that Bob is a respected citizen of the world and is involved with so many interests and projects both inside and outside of the skateboarding world. Included you’ll witness plenty of gnarly skateboarding, but Bob goes beyond that and shares the importance of family and fatherhood, witnessing Tony Hawk’s worst slam ever (in his own backyard), countless unsuccessful attempts at the 900°, the trials and tribulations of The Boom Boom Huck Jam, personal transport of the Olympic torch along a stretch of Brazilian beachfront in Copacabana and meeting face to face with former Vice President Al Gore. Other scenes include a heavy session at the DC Mega Ramp at Point X, legally BASE jumping in Twin Falls, Idaho, skydiving with a wingsuit (and also with a skateboard) and hosting Bam Margera and the Viva La Bam crew for an episode in Brazil.
Professional cinematographer and former pro skater, Jamie Mosberg was a driving force behind the film and it’s editing. His camera work and skills deliver sick action and Bob’s daily journeys chapter by chapter. Bob’s narration brings it all together with an inflection that enlightens the viewer to his beliefs, thoughts and ideals. All in all, this film is a bit long to take in one sitting. Nonetheless, it tells a great story backed by raw and real imagery of a guy driven with ambition to handle life’s assorted challenges and raise the bar in the process. This DVD also includes a 36 page booklet with photos and information relative to the film’s production plus, an accompanying soundtrack CD.
The Bonus and Extras sections include Bob’s first-ever natural loop done with only his raw momentum from a few key kickturns, the Corkscrew project, a tour of Bob’s organic farm, musical jams with Spearhead’s Michael Franti, Bob’s dad, Dean and daughter, Lotus and, even a trip to the dentist.
