Skate trips are the best. Damn fun. Friends, the open road, skating, and new spots…it doesn’t get any better. I’ve been working to get one planned, and after watching the new Four Star video, Super Champion Funzone, I want to leave tomorrow. Yeah, there’s skating, insane top notch skating, from Eric Koston, Mike Carroll, Brian Anderson, PJ Ladd, Max Schaaf, Gonz and Rick Howard, but as they say…it’s all about the journey.
The video follows the Four Star team on a two weeklong demo tour of Tokyo. The fellas rip various spots, sign autographs, get into it with their Japanese guide Rip, and flat out have fun. It’s all good stuff and going into details will just ruin it.
“Wherever I go they’re always like, ‘Hey, it’s good to see you’…and I say yeah, I know it’s good to see me” - Mark Gonzales.
Roller-skate stair gaps, mountain bike wall rides, and longboard hand rails. I don’t think Gonz ever skates a standard board in this video…and we’re all better off for it. The man is a genius and one of the few people who makes skating look effortless, stylish and FUN all at once. His hi-jinx alone makes this a worthwhile addition to the DVD collection.
Oh, and then there’s the additional footage. Brain Anderson has a full bonus part that really showcases his skills and Gonz has a weekend in NYC segment that is straight up crazy. There are also two catalogs shoots caught on tape…one in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco. Both of these are close to complete videos in their own right. Throw in some outakes and a photo gallery and you’ve got a lot of footage to scan through.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget why we all started skating. It’s about fun, friendship, and being creative. Thanks to Four Star for making me want to go out and hit the road as soon as possible. Watch the trailer here.
