It seems contests sometimes get a bad rap. Great skating goes down and, in most cases, skaters get to ride perfect ramps and courses. What kills contest watching (if you’re not there live)? ESPN, NBC and other broadcasters who don’t know shit about skating or how to present it. Ever try watching the X-Games commentators for more than five minutes? Impossible. Never mind the fact that they only present the three skaters they have chosen to feature.
World Cup Skateboarding’s new DVD takes the best contests from 2004 and presents them in a very solid format. You get your money’s worth here as the entire video (not including all the DVD extras: Oregon Trifecta Series, Slide Show, and interviews) clocks in at well over an hour. Some of the events featured include: the Globe World Cup, multiple X-Games, Slam City Jam, The Quiksilver Bowlriders, and the Soul Bowl among others. Also inserted throughout the video are profiles of three incredible skaters: Chris Senn, Ryan Sheckler, and Sandro Dias. These are the real gems of the video. Many people are extensively interviewed regarding these guys, and their footage is amazing. These profiles go beyond what these guys do in a contest setting and explore how they are impacting the progression of skateboarding as a whole.
Let’s hope World Cup Skateboarding continues this series for next year. It’s a well done, great idea that highlights some incredible skateboarding.
