The dudes at 5boro skateboards put out a banger of a video a few months back and I‘d received a copy from Wilkins, but have stumbled in reviewing it due to my busy summer and travel schedule. So without any further delay, and my apologies to the crew at 5boro for lag time, I must say that this is one of those unforgettable underground style skate flicks that makes every skater want to get out and shred after watching it. And filmers should take notice of this visual document with its solid filming and editing, 8mm film footage and classic song selections.
Notably, the transitional segments that follow the team skating together and pass the footage along from one team rider’s part to the next yield a creative and effective combination. And as they roll through the grit filled streets and harshly paved world of the East Coast states, the riders’ parts are sprinkled with pools, parks and transitions.
Yeah, 5boro’s vibe is an all-terrain approach to skateboarding without paying too much attention to a plethora of technical street tricks. There’s plenty of street skating and a whole lot more; much like a good road trip with your friends.
Pro Team riders Charlie Wilkins, Aaron Suski and Dan Pensyl each put in solid parts as does the roster of rising ams Brandon Westgate, Danny Falla, Joe Tookmanian, Andy Pitts and Tato Feliciano. Add to the mix a select section of bonus footy and extra flow team footage in the credits and it’s a solid piece. It’s great to see a skate vid carry the torch of rawness, creativity and soul.
This flick is somewhat on the underground tip, so if your local skateshop doesn’t have “Word of Mouth” in stock or can’t seem to get it to you soon enough, Pick up a copy at 5boro’s website. This one is truly good for your soul and your DVD library. Get to it.
