Powell DVD Classics

The Powell Skateboards crew recently released the first six of their classic skate videos on DVD format to include, The Bones Brigade Video Show, Future Primitive, The Search For Animal Chin, Public Domain, Ban This and Propaganda. Although to my disappointment, there are no additional bonus features included, yet each chapter and scene selection of these videos can now be quickly accessed with the ease of digital navigation. Cool enough.

Whether you’re into viewing the foundation of Tony Hawk’s modern moves at Delmar’s keyhole, the antics of the Greater Gutter Open, Tommy Guerrero’s memorable fluid assault of SF’s streets, Lance Mountain’s inventive and hilarious skits (with and without Neil Blender) or Johnny Rad’s coolness at the Blue Tile Lounge, each of these re-releases are well worth the purchase.

For those of you too young to have experienced skateboarding fifteen to twenty years ago, each of these flicks will enlighten you as a visual document to the types of tricks, styles and trends that often both fueled and plagued the then underground skate scene. Thankfully, many of them have since been buried. And to you older dudes that can still remember, these are the vids that captured the years when you were in your prime and skating backyard wooden structures and launch ramps. Remember those? Yeah, it’s been along time, but sure enough, the good times are all reflected in this collection. Classic footage of Rodney Mullen, The Mountain Manor, Mike Vallely, Doug Smith at the Tijuana skatepark, Hawk at his ramp, and Ray Barbee’s beginnings will bring you back to a carefree time well before the XGames and skatestoppers appeared.

Notably, Stacey Peralta’s camera work and editing captures skateboarding’s past skate heroes and underground era with clean and creative visuals and witty skits. His keen eye for the emergence of new “hot shot” adolescents shows through with action of Colin McKay, Chris Senn, Frankie Hill, Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson, Jovantae Turner, Paulo Diaz, Lance Conklin and Bucky Lasek. Pick up one or the entire collection at Powell’s website or demand them from your nearest skateshop. You’re sure to be glued to your TV screen for many evenings.
