Skateboard Stickers, Book

by Mark Munson & Steve Cardwell
Laurence King Publishing

As the back cover of the book states, “Nearly every skater has a sticker collection of some sort, either on a bedroom door, on the refrigerator or in a shoe box”. Yeah, there are quite a few books on deck graphics, but this is the first coffee table book dedicated to the art of the sticker. Skateboard Stickers does a good job of capturing some interesting sticker stories as well as showcasing some of the most important sticker graphics.

The book is mostly a large collection of sticker designs starting in the mid seventies and coming right up to the present. Peppered throughout are small stories and interviews discussing stickers and their role in skateboarding culture. Notable are articles with Mike Vallely, Salba, and Jim Phillips. The book gets extra points for giving a little background on Consolidated’s ‘Don’t Do It’ campaign and Emerica’s GO Skateboarding sticker sheets, as well as including all the art from the original World Industries ‘StickeRama’ board.

I would have liked a little more variety in the quotes used throughout the book (mostly the same few authors), and the layouts could have really shown even more stickers… but overall it’s a solid effort and worth a look.
