Hot Springs Skateboarders Given Fines

We all watched the video. We all were outraged. Now the skaters have had their day in court. Both pleaded no contest and were given no jail time.

Nineteen-year-old Old Skylar was sentenced to 30 days community service and 85 dollars in fines, plus court costs. Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Jon McCormack pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of third-degree battery for allegedly striking police officer Joey Williams. McCormack was fined 210 dollars, plus costs, and ordered him to perform 30 days of community service.

And as we all know…Officer Williams got off scot-free. Justice? We think not.

Police Learn To Skate In The UK

This certainly isn’t happening in the states…”Hampshire police are sending officers to workshops, attended by up to 30 youngsters aged from 12 to 16, to receive expert tuition.”

It’s actually a pretty smart idea in terms of improving the relationship between the police and young people. “It lets the youngsters see a more human side to the police”. It would be a nice change from this sort of police interaction.

Vert Skaters…Are Getting Older

As the last of the X-Games articles hit the web, this article discusses the aging vert stars or as the article puts it: “The sport has even been around long enough to now have its own version of an old timers’ game”. The author talks to Bucky Lasek, Burnquist and, of course, mentions Shaun White. Our favorite line from the story:

“A toddler next to the practice ramp drew big laughs Saturday when he pointed up and said “mama, it’s Snow White.”

Burnquist On The Olympics

The New York Times asked Bob Burnquist what he thought about skateboarding in the Olympics. He was skepical: “I’m not going to be the one blocking it,” he said. “I’m just going to be the one asking the hard questions, at least for myself, whether I’m going to be involved or not.”

And, big surprise, Shaun White “said he would be willing to compete in skateboarding, as he did at the X Games”.

Time will tell if it’s actually going to happen in London.
