Van Wastell Memorial Fund

A memorial fund has been set up in the name and honor of Van Wastell. In lieu of flowers for his family and for the service this afternoon, monetary contributions are being accepted. As many of us know, the process of funeral arrangements can be extremely expensive, stressful and wearing on the family. Knowing that, any amount, big or small, in Van’s honor, will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to contribute, you can make a deposit at a Wells Fargo branch to account #8352614187. Checks should be written to: “Van Wastell Memorial Fund.”

A little help from the skateboarding community and people that care can go a very long way.

Van Wastell’s Memorial Service
Saturday, September 20th at 1:00 pm
Conejo Mountain Funeral Home, Memorial Park & Crematory
2052 Howard Road
Camarillo, CA 93012

Austrailians Help “Skateistan” to Rise in Afghanistan

With the help of a trio of Australian volunteers, youth in Afghanistan’s war torn capital of Kabul have turned an empty swimming pool, built during the Soviet occupation, into their own Skateistan. Have a look into this Time magazine report where the kids have taken it upon themselves to propel their own skate scene in a rough region where recreation obviously takes a back seat to education and fundamental needs of its people. Quite inspirational for a DIY operation with only four skateboards in the country.

Take Back Your Backyard

Just prior to hosting record crowds at the Dew Tour stop in Salt Lake City, Utah this past weekend, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department has officially passed an ordinance to ban all ramps (present or future) on residential property. Their reason? Well, of course, Community Noise Pollution Control Regulation.

Apparently, a couple of city officials dropped by the home of skater Nick Hale just weeks after he’d re-layered his mini ramp with brand new Skatelite to inform him of his now-illegal structure. As a result, he has launched a new website, SLCMiniRamp.com to round up support against this very unfair and unjust ordinance.

Skateboarding’s Renaissance Man, Dave Carnie and his wife Tania have embarked on a new project surely set to turn the most experienced food critics on their ears and tongues. Yes, Dave’s been writing about food recently for Dining Out magazine, but not all of his accounts make it to print in their entirety. But fear not, the unedited stuff has found a home via the couple’s blog called Food on Drunk. As Dave says and we agree, it is to food what Big Brother was to skateboarding. Uber fun and nonsense!
