13th Annual Basic Bowl Bash Tomorrow
This one just in as a reminder from Dave Duncan. Tomorrow, Saturday, April 26th, Double D will be hosting the 13th annual Basic Backyard Bar-B-Que Bowl Bash in Huntington Beach. Show up by noon to sign up to skate in the jam sessions. There will be several age divisions.
The house is located at the end of Albacore Drive. Unlike the new San Jose skatepark opening tomorrow, no pads are required, which means more punk points from the judges! As always, it should be a fun one.

Skate Baghdad?
We ran across this article on a California businessman pouring millions of dollars into developing a massive U.S. style amusement park in downtown Baghdad that will feature a skateboard park, rides, a concert theater and a museum. Wait, did they say a skate park? Yup, and it seems the skatepark will be the first attraction to open this July.
From the article:
“Parts for 200,000 skateboards and materials to build ramps will be shipped from the United States to Iraq for assembly at state-owned factories, and provided free to Iraqi children along with helmets and knee pads.
Mr. Werner also plans to import American instructors to teach Iraqi children how to skateboard. When the sport catches on, Mr. Werner will start to sell the boards, which bear the slogan “Ride Baghdad Skate Park” in hot-pink Arabic.”
We have to wonder who is making the boards? Will Andy Mac fly over to spread a drug free message of skating for freedom? Can kids stop getting shot at long enough to shred? Will Mr. Werner turn a profit and in the process make Iraq the next skateboarding “gold-mine?” Stay tuned.

Recap of 420 Events
Last weekend saw several skate events take place across the country. Due to threatening wet weather, Brooklyn’s King of Spring was rescheduled to take place on Saturday, a day earlier that its originally planned 420 outing. With RB Umali’s sharp video documentation, the skate jam looked to be packed with sick action throughout the afternoon. Check out the footage with Zered Bassett, Jahmal Williams, Dan Pensyl, Billy Rohan and a swarm of ams and upstarts.
Sunday, April 20th brought together two remaining skate gatherings. The first being in Tampa where the SPoT crew and friends had assembled for a 420 Bowl Bash at the Bro Bowl. Well, it turns out that the civil servants in blue that are supposed to serve and protect, happen to frequent the SPoT website so they were well informed and showed up to the party to regulate and bring frowns (and parking tickets) to a planned afternoon of good times.
Out in San Francisco, about 200 people lined the sidewalk on 14th and Mission to witness and participate in the Satori 420 skate jam at 3 Up 3 Down. The illicit 30 minute contest stretched on well over an hour, with no police intervention whatsoever. Standout skaters and tricks included: Apollo Cuts - nollie shove nose manual, 360 shove out, Brad Johnson - manual to laserflip and kickflip nose manuals, and Aaron Harrington - 5-0 across the block and a nice manual to 360 shove out. Several others tried back lip and front lip across the entire block to no success. When it was all done, it was Adrian Williams who took the $420 purse with consistency. He handled 2-3 tricks capping off with a 5-0 to back tail. Unfortunately, Brandon Turner showed up too late for the competition, but charged a high speed nollie noseslide to end the event to the cheers of the crowd. It was a perfect stress free day with no problems, just the way it used to be in SF.

San Jose Gets Hot
The greater San Jose area sounds like the place to be this weekend. On Friday evening, April 25th On the Corner Music is hosting an opening reception for a collective art show with several skaters, artists and musicians involved. Then, Saturday brings the long awaited official opening of the Lake Cunningham Regional Skatepark. With an emphasis on transitioned terrain and “full pads” requirements, it’s a guess to just how many skaters will strap on pads and helmets to get their kicks on the massive skatepark come opening day. Nonetheless, SJ’s very own Skate Rockists Clay Wheels will be on the scene churning through a live set to rock the sessions.

adidas in China, Team Change
Head over to the adidas site and check out an image gallery and a write up on the skate team’s recent trip to China. Great far east footage from Dennis Busenitz, Tim O’Connor, Nestor Jenkins, Benny Fairfax and the rest of the team.
On a related note, Bryce Kanights was surprisingly dropped from his role
as team marketing manager after two years of building a respected team of
skate talent for adidas (and creating content like the piece above). Time
will tell what’s next from the three stripes.

Shredding in the Middle East
Skateboarder Alex Klein is in Israel and Gaza right now heading up a documentary film project about life and surfing in the Middle East. In a region seized by war, terror, and hatred, the film titled, God Went Surfing With the Devil intends to chronicle the lives of incredible young men, Israeli and Palestinian, who have put down their guns and picked up surfboards, reaching out to each other with hope and love in their hearts.
God Went Surfing With the Devil will hear from Palestinians like Mohammed A’lwan about what it’s like to surf in a war zone. It will explore 16 year-old Omer Levin’s pursuit of sponsorship amidst the prospect of conscription. It will document life with Abdulla, an Arab-Israeli surfer who’s been shunned by fellow Arabs and attacked by Jewish settlers. It will accompany American Matt Olsen’s attempts to open Gaza’s first surf camp. It will visit with surfers, soldiers, militants and politicians.
Alex Klein has secured a talented, ready, and able crew including cameraman Chase Masterson, editor Jon Schwartz, Bryan Derballa, Danilo Parra and Nikki Scoggins. They’ve been in Tel-Aviv shooting since April 1st and are looking to have a trailer posted up on their site by June 1st. In the meantime, check the film’s Notes From the Field for a daily run down behind the cameras.

Wisconsin Kid Hammers Out 1,200 Consecutive Kickflips
This record-breaking news was posted close to a week ago on Skate and Annoy, and we wanted to share it with our readers. Apparently, on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Wisconsin’s 4 Seasons skatepark in Milwaukee, pint-sized teen Zach Kral flicked 1,200 kickflips in at row to set a new world record and win the first ever FUZE Kickflip Challenge. Hmmm…we can only surmise that the official title “Kickflip Challenge” hadn’t been previously trademarked by Krux? They originally birthed this worldwide series of grass roots styled contests right?
Nonetheless, Zach shattered the previous record of 566 consecutive kickflips by more than double! Congrats!
