Vans to Remodel Its Skatepark at The Block
On a related note to a dismal day for vert skateboarding, we received the following press release from Vans this afternoon. It’s apparent that their vert ramp is soon to be later’d…no, not by O’Dell.
Cypress, CA (April 3, 2008) - After almost 10 great years at The Block at Orange, the Vans Skatepark is getting a much-needed facelift to nearly every inch of skateable park terrain. The remodel, which will begin April 7th, includes an entirely new, plaza-inspired layout that will meet the demands of today’s ever-progressing street skater. Exciting additions to the new street course include a massive 80-foot mini ramp, as well as a large viewing area for the public, both of which will be constructed out of the current Vert ramp structure.
This new layout will open up an additional 3,000 square feet to the street course area and create opportunities for Vans to host special events and varied skate contests in addition to the Pro-tec Pool Party.
The new course will be built by Team Pain, the highly-respected and skater-owned company out of Florida that specializes in custom skate parks and structures.
The new park will be completed in time for the 4th annual Pro-tec Pool Party which will be held May 17th at the park’s famed replica Combi Bowl.
The Vans Skatepark will remain open throughout the remodel. The reconstruction will be rolled out in phases throughout the next month with various sections slated to remain open to the public. Vans encourages those interested in skating to call the park ahead of time for updated information on course section closures.

Vert is Dead for ESPN
This news just in via the official website of the X Games. ESPN has announced this afternoon that they have canceled Vert from this summer’s X Games 14 in favor of a newer discipline known as SuperPark. In addition to citing poor TV ratings, a lack of widely available vert ramps for enthusiasts and an aging talent pool of vert competitors, X Games General Manager Chris Stiepock offered, “With the skating at skateparks all over the world not being true street or true vert, we want to honor the huge segment of that population that’s being ignored. Kids will be able to watch the X Games skateboarding competition for SuperPark and see pros on the same obstacles that they might be able to ride at their local park.”

Another Nail in the Vert Coffin?
The realm of making a living as a vert skater these days might be getting a bit tougher. According to this TWS Biz article by former vert dog Sean Mortimer, ESPN is making the decision today whether or not to include the vert skating portion of its X Games this summer. We agree that the long standing vert contest format has run its course and is stale for participants and viewers alike. Perhaps a return to a jam format is in order? The X Games meeting rooms are heated up today…we’ll stay tuned and keep you posted.
