Checking in on Philly

Earlier in the week we posted some news that the city of Philadelphia has secured $1 million as a financial contribution towards the much needed and long overdue Franklin’s Paine skatepark project.

Have a look at the official site and view some large video clips and solid interviews with those involved and backing the effort including one of Philly’s street bred sons, Stevie Williams.

Back in Axion?

Yesterday we’d received a news release to announce the re-launch of Axion branded footwear within the “action sports” market. Hmmm… will wakeboarders, snowboarders, FMXers and other extreme athletes stand to make financial gains in this rebirth? Is Kareem Campbell involved as well? Probably not. Only time will tell with this one. One thing we know for sure is that the URL for the website is still up for sale and will have to be negotiated.

Skateboarding And Film

Starting off as a review of Gus Van Sant’s new film,
Paranoid Park, this Guardian UK website story wonders into skate culture film makers including Stacy Peralta and Spike Jonze. The author even brings up Adams, Hosoi and Gator.

This Larry Clark quote is pretty interesting: “There is more life in a skateboarder skating down the street than in a hundred Hollywood actors.” In this day and age, we have to agree.

Mayor Helps to Fund Philly Skatepark

Philadelphia skateboarders have a huge reason to celebrate this week as the city of Love received a big financial boost and a solid $1 million grant towards the funding of Franklin’s Paine Skatepark. As skaters wait for construction to begin, rolling the wooden plank in Love Park remains to be illegal.

Roster Hops and New Recruits

Lizard King has been turned loose from Think Skateboards with a replacement said to be announced soon. Word on the street is that Lizard will be attached to this new and yet to be launched effort. Stay tuned. According to a recent press release, Paul Trep is rolling his kit around on Silver trucks. Scott Decenzo joins the team at Momentum Wheel Co.. Comin’ in hot off his breakthrough part in 411VM, Michah Hollinger is the newest Am over at Crimson. Felipe Ortiz fills in that same position at Blind. Aaron “Jaws” Homoki has been added to the roster at IPath. The German phenom known as “Willow” has been under the wing of the Flip camp for a while now. Just weeks after putting in hard work for their West Coast Feast tour, he’s officially landed a spot with the International Am squad.

Real Skateboards and friends Collaborate for Big Mike

With Real Skateboards’ “Actions REALized” efforts, Jim Thiebaud and friends of Michael Jeansonne in Louisiana (and beyond) have collaborated to produce a limited edition skateboard to raise money for Big Mike’s family and commemorate his love for skateboarding. These Wes Humpston inspired boards will become available at the end of January. Be sure to pick up one for yourself or a dozen or so for your shop!
