San Francisco Skatepark Hits a Snag

After five years of political red tape and plenty of gold shovels, it turns out that the city of San Francisco is not going to go through with the previously proposed direction to have Grindline build its highly needed and anticipated Potrero Del Sol skatepark. The suits and SF’s Park and Recreation department are now looking for another qualified bidder who is interested. They have five companies with experience in building skate parks that they are in talks with to sculpt to concrete. Grindline will still be involved as a design consultant, but it sounds like their designs have been scrapped.

What this means for the skaters of the SF Bay Area (and beyond) is more delays with a project that had been given the green light over a year ago.

If you feel the need to remind city officials that this skatepark is important and it needs to be built soon with the right knowledge and skill, contact Yomi Agunbiade: Yomi.Agunbiade@sfgov.org

Skateboarding Included In 2012 Olympics?

According to the internet, it’s looking like skateboarding will hit the Olympics in 2012. Dozens of articles have been popping up this week, including this one on the Sports Illustrated web site. We’re not sure how it will turn out but for now it seems like the International Cycling Union will be heading up the skateboarding effort. Huh? From the article:

“The The International Olympic Committee does not recognize an international skateboarding federation, so the sport would first need to be adopted as a discipline under the International Cycling Union umbrella. After that, the UCI could make a formal proposal to the IOC for its inclusion in the Olympics.”

We’re guessing vert and big air will make the cut…but what about street? Should be very interesting. And, big surprise, not everyone is happy about the possible inclusion.
