Raising Money For Ray Underhill

Grab those hammers it’s time to break those piggy banks! What may be the largest online auction for collectable skateboard items is upon us. Pros and industry notables from the past and present have donated a grip of one-of-a-kind gear to help raise money for Ray Underhill and his battle against a chordoma brain tumor.

Ray turned pro for Powell Peralta during the 1980s, earned his own model, and traveled the world for contests and demos. He eventually married, had two children, and settled in North Carolina, where he works for Eastern Skateboard Supply as a graphic artist. Last year Ray was diagnosed with a chordoma brain tumor. He’s undergone surgeries and battled back from paralyzed vocal cords and other complications. He’ll spend the summer at Loma Linda medical facilities in California for radiation treatment.

This eBay auction takes place from May 13th-20th and is hosted by Grind For Life, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide financial assistance to cancer patients and their families when traveling long distances to doctors and hospitals.

For more information and updates on the Ray Underhill auction, visit www.rayunderhill.com.

Carroll Speaks To Thrasher

Head over to Thrasher and check out this web only interview with SF’s own Mike Carroll. He discusses his support from Fausto, throws down a list of top threes and names drops Liz Lemon. I guess that makes me a ‘Nerd’ as well for understanding that one…

Lance Mountain Joins Nike

Skate legend Lance Mountain will be lacing up the swoosh from now on. From the Nike Skateboarding press release:

“The decision to put Lance on was not something we took lightly. While several of our pros may be regarded in certain circles as having ‘legend’ status, we’ve never seriously considered putting a true legend of skateboarding on the team. However, when Lance goes to accept his TransWorld Skateboarding ‘Legend Award’ this June, he’ll be doing it in a pair of Nikes.”

Look for Lance’s part in the new Flip video Extremely Sorry…as well as all things Nike.

Capitola Councilman Doesn’t Apologize, ‘Champion Of The Sport’

Early this week we brought you the story of Capitola Councilman Kirby Nicol who made the statement,”I don’t like skateboarders, and I don’t like skateboard parks” at a city council meeting.

This recent Santa Cruz Sentinel article states that Mr. Nicol has been ‘deluged with e-mails’ from angry skateboarders regarding his statement. Still on the defensive and not willing to apologize, he even goes on to say he’s a “champion of the sport”:

“The record will show that it was, in fact, I, who initiated the movement to build such a facility in a local park, despite the fact that I, personally, have had a series of bad experiences with the sport and do not embrace the demonstrated cultural values of the activity. The skateboard park project has failed in our community due to overwhelming public opposition”

Note: While we at SKATEDAILY.net support every skaters decision to send e-mails to Councilman Nicol in protest we urge you to keep them clean and respectful. Let’s not fuel an unfair stereotype and more negative leanings towards our ‘culture’.
