Hawk And Athletes for Hope
We are well aware that the term ‘athletes’ doesn’t fit skateboarders and skateboarding being a ‘sport’ doesn’t sit well with most.
That being said, it’s still pretty impressive to see Tony Hawk’s name on the list of founders of the Athletes for Hope. To see Hawk listed next to such main stream heavyweights as Lance Armstrong, Cal Ripken Jr., Mario Lemieux and Muhammad Ali certainly shows the progression and acceptance of skateboarding in the past few years. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with giving back and inspiring others.

DIY Skate Scenes in Full Effect
When it really comes down to it, there’s no solid reason to sit around and complain about the lack of a skate scene in your town. Really. Armed with a strong dose of determination, collective community donations and funds amongst friends, you can build your own thriving skate joint. It just needs that spark. So, get off your ass, gather up your crew and make something happen.
As a visual reference, among the dozen or so DIY skate areas out there globally, here’s a quick list of examples that haven proven to be successful with skaters’ creative efforts of sweat and blood.
Burnside (The Mothership) - Portland, Oregon
Marginal Way - Seattle, Washington
Washington Street - San Diego, California
Channel Street - San Pedro, California
Bordertown - Oakland, California
FDR Skatepark - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Rote Flora - Hamburg, Germany

“I Don’t Like Skateboarders”
The so called liberal, yet ever so political town of Capitola, California is running out of options in its quest for a public skatepark. The residents of course are all for the kids to enjoy a safe haven to enjoy their skateboarding, as long as the skatepark is not exactly adjacent to their neighborhoods. So much for commitment huh?
As a testament to blind ignorance, one city leader is straight up opposed at the notion. “I don’t like skateboarders, and I don’t like skateboard parks,” said Councilman Kirby Nicol before he proposed scrapping the entire idea.
