Clay Wheels to Invade the Northwest

The small army of skaterockers known as Clay Wheels will be doing a quick Northwest Tour next week to turn up the heat for spring. The crew will hit the stage on the night of Friday the 13th at Slabtown in Portland to rage with their skate pals and adoring fans.

Then in the morning it’s off to the grand opening of the new skatepark in Irrigon, Oregon where the gents will skate and rock a set before they hit the road to plug in and play again later that night at the Comet Tavern in Seattle. True road warrior style.

Meet The Parents - A Bit of Parallelism?

David Bergthold (owner of Blockhead Skateboards and video producer/director) and his wife Laurie (IASC Marketing Director) are the new proud parents of their son, Jettsen Spencer Bergthold (aka Jett), born March 30th. He came into the world at 7 lbs. 15 oz. 19.5 inches and all is well.

As a note of very odd coincidence, Roger Harrell (Skateboarder magazine Publisher) and Dave were born on April 16th and 17th respectively of the same year. Late last month, Laurie and April gave birth in the same hospital to baby sons and it looked like Dave’s son was going to be born the day after Roger’s ( see SkateDaily post from Thursday March 29th), but Jettsen lagged until just a bit after midnight giving him the 30th for a birthday instead of the 29th… so pretty much the day after. Jettsen Bergthold and Justice Harrell were also the exact same birth weight and length. Wow. How’s that for parallelism?

Ray Underhill Needs Your Help

One of skateboarding’s former professionals and great dudes is in need of the skateboarding community’s help. Ray Underhill was diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and had a procedure to remove a large portion of it last month. As a result, his non-covered medical expenses will be much more than his family can afford.

Unfortunately, Ray’s having a rough time at the moment. His visit to Loma Linda, CA for radiation therapy may be delayed by a few weeks. He’s having a difficult time repairing from the throat surgery and the doctors don’t want to start radiation until he’s strong enough to withstand the procedure. He still can’t swallow and his spit creates coughing fits and he can’t get solid sleep. The family is staying strong, but obviously it’s been difficult for them. They’ve been reading the guestbook comments on Ray’s website and that has truly lifted their spirits.

One of Ray’s many, many friends, Sean Mortimer is gathering collectible skate artifacts, rare boards, artwork, photographs, shirts, etc. for an upcoming eBay auction toward Ray’s behalf. All skate goods are needed as soon as possible (by April 13th) and should be shipped to:

Sean Mortimer
3148 Camino Crest
Oceanside, CA
92056

If you feel that you don’t have any skate gear worth donating for the auction, you can also make monetary donations directly through Ray’s website. Thanks for supporting Ray and his family through this difficult time.

We ran across this interview with Sole Tech CEO Pierre Andre Senizergues over at NewConsumer.com. He talks about the new Etnies SEED product line as well as running his California offices on solar power, shoe glues, recycling, Back To The Future and Darrel Hannah.

It’s good to see some action being taken by the skate community…this stuff can make a difference. When is it all available world wide?

Steve Rocco, The Man Who Souled The World

Coming soon, a documentary on the man, the myth and the legend: Steve Rocco. From the official film website:

“Steve Rocco, the controversial godfather of street, led a cultural revolution during the early 1990s toppling the corporate giants who controlled the skateboard industry and ushering in the most degenerate, savage, innovative & entertaining era in the history of skateboarding. For better or worse his legacy shaped skateboarding as we know it today like no other.”

This post was stolen from the fine folks over at The Skateboard Mag who come across the site as well as the fantastic trailer posted on The Hot Crew. Thanks to both for letting us poach.

A Trio of SF Skate Events in April

SF is surely the place to be in the coming weeks this month. There are three skate related events that we know of that will be popping off with good times.

On Friday, April 13th adidas Skateboarding presents the Krooked shoe release party at the DLX store on Market Street. Be on the floor in the store for product giveaways, a huge Superstar piñata beating and Tommy Guerrero’s musical magic too.

The Krux film, “Feelin’ It!” has finally been completed after two years of global travel and burning endless rolls of film. It premieres in SF on Wednesday, April 18th at DNA lounge and it’s FREE admission as long as you have a legit ID to get pass the doormen.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Slap magazine will be hosting its 15 year anniversary party at Club Six on Friday, April 20th. Amongst the revelers and numerous Slap pals there will be a live performance by The Blacktop Project (Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee, Matt Rodriguez and Chuck Treece) + a special guest. And if that’s not enough, check the walls draped and covereg with Slap artifacts and memorabilia, and the premiere of the Slap designed Nike Abbington shoe.

*Beware of the club’s meathead bouncers. Have any doubt? Ask Schmitty.
