The State Of Skateboarding In San Francisco

SFGate has posted an article untitled No easy skate: S.F. is no longer shredder heaven. In it they discuss the “liberation” of Hubba, EMB’s legend status and the future of SF’s place in skate history.

Blowing out the skate related content, you can also check out an article on Zach Wormhoudt, a short guide to local parks and a street focused video.

Friday Round Up

- Flip Skateboards has created a message board to share your thoughts on fallen am Shane Cross. Click over and leave some kind words. They have also created one to leave words of encouragement to Ali Boulala and learn the latest details on his condition. Epicly Later’d has posted some great photos of both skaters so be sure and take a look. There is also a nice tribute over at Deluxe

- And speaking of Epicly Later’d, Patrick has just launched his lastest show focused on Andrew Reynolds. Always online time well spent.

- Corey Duffel is now lacing up on Osiris.

- Jerry Hsu has a signature Ricta Wheel out now.

- Did some mention wheels? Hubba Wheels has decided to break their silence on the blank deck debate and launch this thought provoking site focusing on the issues at hand. OK, maybe not…but stupid isn’t always a bad thing.

- And finally, if you haven’t checked out Chris Nieratko’s new website you are missing out. He’s got more than a few classic Big Brother interviews to keep you entertained and pretty much everything he writes is gold.

After this week we could all use a good laugh. Take care, go skating and always remember to value friends and family.

Payless Buys Airwalk, Vision Street Wear

Twenty years ago there weren’t dozens of specialty skate shoe companies out there, just a few who dared to cater to a very small market. The two biggest were Airwalk and Vision Street Wear. Skaters from Lance to Hawk to Jason Lee rocked Airwalks while Gonz, Gator and countless others rocked Vision Street Wear.

Well, times have certainly changed and these forgotten brands (though still barely clinging to life) have been bought up by Payless Shoes and will most likely be part of an attempt to grow sales to the newly named skurban market.

Also included in the sale, Skate Attack, an in-line skate and equipment brand. Way to go Payless. Good luck with that.

Catching Up With Cab

We came across this article that outlines what Nor Cal legend Steve Caballero has been up to recently. Cab talks about his new son on the way, traveling and skating professionally for over 30 years.

“”We sure weren’t doing it for the money,” Caballero said. “We simply had a passion for skating that outweighed everything else. The marketing back then made us famous, which wasn’t something we planned on. It was just something that happened.”

Paying to Play in San Jose

San Jose is set to begin the construction of its 40,000 square foot skatepark with a groundbreaking ceremony this Saturday. While it will become the largest in Northern California, it will not exactly be the cheapest either. The price tag of $4.76 million sure packs a punch, but perhaps the $2 admission fee will help the city recoup that hefty expense over the next thirty years or so.

Sad News From Down Under

We just received this terrible news…
“Flip am Shane Cross passed away last night in Australia. The 20-year-old was fatally injured while riding on the back of Ali Boulala’s motorcycle in Australia. Ali survived the accident but is currently in critical condition.”

Our positive thoughts and best wishes go out to the friends and families of Shane and Ali. And let’s all hope Ali makes a quick and full recovery.

Even More EA Skate Footage, Gonz

This game isn’t out yet? Man, there has been a lot of press as more and more videos are released and screen grabs of game play are slowly leaked out.

We happen to really like the latest Mark Gonzales video and can’t wait to see him in the game. Go here and you can watch it along with Jerry Hsu, Busenitz and some ‘first gameplay’ footage.

There was also a recent San Francisco EA Skate launch party. Transworld was there and took some photos.
