The New York Skate Movie

‘The New York Skate Movie (Working Title)’ tells the story of street skating from a New York centered point of view. From the site:

“Along with San Francisco and Barcelona, New York is arguably the modern street skating city, both in reality and image. Because of the unique background, experience and perspective of the film’s creators and the decision to “cast” the city of New York as one of the main characters, New York City Skate Film promises to be an unprecedented, seminal film.”

The trailer alone is great…we can only imagine the full length film. Classic footage, new footage and input from a long list of greats. Thanks to The Skateboard Mag for the heads up on this one.

Skating To Syndrome Success

The Patriot News Online has posted a ‘skate success story’ about Syndrome leader and past Zorlac pro Rob Mertz. It’s a bit strange that they focus so much on the negatives like injuries and dropping out of school, rather than the freedom of doing what you love as a career. We can all relate to hearing this from a parent:

“It wasn’t anything you wanted your son to do. I wanted him to be a doctor or a lawyer,” she said. “I was hysterical. I cried a lot. I never knew where he was.”

Looping It in Santa Cruz?

The city of Santa Cruz is set to open its new public skatepark next Thursday, February 22nd. The skatepark at Mike Fox Park will become the first concrete skatepark built within the seaside town since Derby Park was dropped on the landscape many decades ago. Notably, this park includes the first-ever “made for skating” full pipe in Northern California.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will commence at 3pm with a pro skate demo to follow at 4pm, and then the park opens up for the general public to skate at 4:30pm. Bring along your brain bucket.

Everbody Remain Calm…

From time to time we come through with some rare online gems and this morning we’ve discovered excerpted footage of Cheryl Dunn’s film short, “Backworlds for Words” featuring the Gonz’s 1999 brilliant display of performance art within the galleries of the Stadtisches Museum in Monchengladbach, Germany.

Gonz certainly puts poetry in motion.

Happenings With the Homies

Two of our SF Bay Area homies are holding their own events this Friday, February 16th and both are not to be missed. In San Jose, Film Por Vida founder, Print Exchange proponent, and friend of many friends, Jai Tanju is having a book release party at Black and Brown from 7-10pm. The photo book is a self-published 196 page effort with b/w photos shot with a camera Marc Johnson gave to Jai a few years ago. You can can preview a few images of the book and buy it online through lulu.com… have a look. Yeah Jai!

Meanwhile, a few miles away in Redwood City, Creepy Kyle is premiering his newest skate flick, “Turd Life” at Skateworks amongst friends and revelers. With a quarter pipe contest also locked in on the scene, the evening’s action should be right on point.
