Street Cultures Collide

This Journal Gazette articles discusses the recent surge in ‘skateboard rap’ with the recent ‘Kick Push’ and ‘Vans’ songs that have hit the airwaves. They talk to Pharrell, Phelps and Fiasco about the black/white/skate/sellout skate hip-hop relationship.

From the article:
“Skateboarding and hip-hop started kicking each other’s tires in the early ’90s, when skaters adopted rappers’ baggy-jeaned look and hard-core rap replaced punk rock as the de facto soundtrack to the X Games.”

Sorry, but the hip-hop/skate connection was not born at the X-Games or even in the early 90’s. Tommy Guerrero and Jim Thiebaud were representing Public Enemy since the very beginning. And who could forget the STET logo inked on Natas’ grip tape? Glen E. Friedman was snapping photos of the young Beastie Boys skating and even one of the Fat Boys rocking a board via 1985. Street skating and hip hop will always be linked…whether the mainstream media notices or not.

éS Grabs Danny Garcia

More shoe news as Danny Garcia joins the éS team. From the press release:

“While there are some seriously technical skaters in the world, few can turn that high level of ability into a flawlessly executed style. Danny is one of the few that does every time he steps on a skateboard. He left us all in awe with his last part in Habitat’s Mosaic video, and you won’t have to wait too much longer to see more of him. Danny is currently finishing up his part for Habitat’s forthcoming video due out next year, and will have a full part in the éS video that will be released in Fall 2007.”

éS Game of Skate Results

Saturday’s éS Game of Skate final showdown at ASR was one of the best flatground stunt battles ever. In the final match up an unknown tech gun from Germany, Alex Mizurov threw down trick for trick against heavy hitter and SOTY05 winner Chris Cole. The pair both tossed and matched up triple kickflips, double tres, and other difficult tricks at each other. In the end, Alex managed to take out Chris for his claim of $10K and the 06 Game of Skate title.
