Chili Bowl Cook Off Results
Toad and Salmon’s 2nd annual Chili Bowl cookoff at SF’s Crocker Amazon skatepark went off with a bang yesterday with lots of fun, friends, bbque, crockpots of chili, adult beverages, product tosses, and top notch skateboarding too. Mixed generations of skaters gathered, competed and shared in the energy of a rare and warm summer afternoon in SF. While several unfortunate collisions took out a few of the local favorites in the skate jams, others rose above the rest and showed their might. It was grassroots skating all for the sake of skating and the chili was just as epic.

Philly Heats Up with a Mini Ramp Comp at FDR
There is nothing extreme about “SkateNerd’s Hot in the Shade at FDR 2006”. SkateNerd Inc. is hosting Philadelphia’s first ever mini ramp contest at FDR Skatepark in South Philadelphia. This competition will take place on the small steel 4.5 ft high skateboard ramp at FDR.
The sponsors are really what make this event special. While top skateboard competitions are usually sponsored by huge soda beverage corporations and mega bucks footwear brands, SkateNerd has another approach. Whole Foods has sponsored the competition with shopping cards for their health food supermarkets and fresh water to drink. Small skateboard companies such as True Love Collective, Saturday and Traffic put forth t-shirts and boards for contest winners. Artists and web site designers such as Creeper and Haveboard.com donated their skills and time with mural art and web promotion. Skateboard shops, Minnow and Nocturnal donated gift cards, skateboard equipment and even cash!
SkateNerd sees Philadelphia’s skateboard culture as a creative and healthy lifestyle. However with out many places to ride the skateboard community is in danger. Funds raised through t-shirt sales and a low cost bbq will be donated to FDR Skatepark as well as the Skateboard Advocacy Network, who seeks to advocate for skateboarders through organized representation and community action.
Those extreme contests are lame, get with it and come down to FDR on August 26th!

Independent To Release Low Trucks
For several months now there have been rumblings and undercover hype about the upcoming release of Independent Truck Company’s Low trucks. While, riding a bit contrary to the brand’s deep history as the best turning trucks since forever (28 years and counting), the market demands a street-specific performance truck and Independent surely delivered.
From the official press release:
Independent Trucks is proud to announce the worldwide release on September 15, 2006 of the first-ever Independent low-profile street truck; the new Independent Stage 9 Low.
Utilizing the original Fast-Action Independent Geometry with the same kingpin and pivot angles–the new Stage 9 Low turns and responds quickly and precisely, just like an Independent truck should. By keeping the original axle position relative to the mounting holes the new Stage 9 Low provides the truest wheel base possible and keeps the meat of the baseplate outside of your wheels for solid nose and tail tricks. The shape of the inside portion of the hanger has been rounded for additional grind space on Smith and feeble grinds.
In its debut release, the new Stage 9 Low will come in Silver with red cushions in size 129. Independent will also be releasing an Eric Koston Stage 9 Low in conjunction with the release of this new truck. 139 sizes will be available for Holiday release.
Upon testing these Low trucks, Eric was asked of his opinion and he replied, “Rides like an Indy.”
And the rest of you thought they wouldn’t?

Helping a Brutha in Need
Early this summer, Deluxe’s filmer Biggs was hit while riding his skateboard by a taxi cab that ran a stop sign. He got served and was very lucky that he didn’t die. In an effort to help offset his huge medical bills, Beers & Bros Presents: “The Best of Biggs” video premiere at Thee Parkside located at 1600 17th Street (at the corner of Wisconsin) in San Francisco.
The “The Best of Biggs” video is a one night only viewing of a short film Biggs put together of all of the best footage he has shot in the last few years of living in San Francisco. Biggs has no plans of cutting the footage to DVD, so this could be your only chance to see the flick.

Doors at 8pm. Video at 10pm.
Plus: DLXSF product raffle. Come on down and win big.
Also, MicE might be shaving heads so Biggs doesn’t feel left out. So don’t show up wearing a beanie or hat, you might be the next to get it.

It’s that time of year again, The Slam City Jam goes off this weekend at Stampede Park in Calgary, AB starting on Friday and ending Sunday night with the Pro Finals from 4-10pm. As always it should be a great contest and gathering.
Wondering why it was moved from Vancouver to Calgary? Vancouver is working hard to get ready for the 2010 winter Olympics. Hopefully four years will be enough time.

The third stop of the Dew Tour brought out loads of amplitude and wicked spills and thrills to the skate fans and mainstream crowds seated in the Rose Garden of Portland, Oregon. Perhaps those armchair skateboarders glued to their TV sets over the weekend caught the action too.
