Keep A Breast - Kings & Queens of Skateboarding

Keep A Breast with FUEL TV Keep A Breast Kings & Queens

The Keep A Breast Foundation has announced FUEL TV Keep A Breast Kings & Queens, a special exhibition happening this October in San Francisco. This exhibition fuses skateboarding’s past and present, uniting the most influential men and women in the industry to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The one-of-a-kind art show features breast casts of Pink, Joan Jett, Elissa Steamer, Rosa Gonzalez, and more, decorated by influential skaters and artists such as Mark Gonzales, Robert Williams, Ed Templeton and Wes Humpston. Curated and documented by skate photographer Désirée Astorga, the casts will be showcased alongside Astorga’s photographs depicting the casting process from strips of plaster to artistic creation.

In addition to the plaster breast casts, the exhibition will feature an infamous cast of Bam Margera’s rear end, painted by Ed Templeton. All casts are customized into artistic symbols that will raise awareness of cancer and benefit Keep A Breast’s youth education and awareness programs.

A sneak preview of the event will premiere in early September at ASR in San Diego. Keep A Breast Kings & Queens officially opens on October 7th at the Receiver Gallery in the Mission District of San Francisco. The exhibition will be open to the public through October 29th. All casts will be auctioned online at www.keep-a-breast.org and proceeds benefit Keep A Breast’s youth education programs.

KOTR06 - Gunning For Zero

Building up to be fiercest King of the Road competition yet, Thrasher magazine’s KOTR 2006 drops the hammer at 11:59 pm tonight. Four teams will go for the crown, the cash, and the cover with numerous challenges and miles of highway ahead of them. Two-time champs Zero, will hit the road from Boston in their weighty bid for a three peat. Who’s in the mix to outgun them? On the streets of Miami, the Toy Machinists are geared up to get busy with a heavy and able crew, the members of Darkstar will roll westward from Raleigh, NC to achieve their mission of non-stop work, and the hellions that make up the squad known as Baker are fueled up in New York City for a lengthy path of skate destruction.

Who are this year’s KOTR Mystery Guests? Perhaps these dudes?

Nonetheless, good luck fellas, you’re gonna need it.

Elemental Shift

A little shake up going on at the moment with Element. Both Jake Rupp and Colt Cannon have been released from the team while another heavy hitter formerly with Real and Plan B is said to be on their roster soon. Is Ray Barbee somehow involved as well?

Skateboarding Stunts for the Masses

Nearly thirty years ago Duane Peters became the first of our kind to step up and experiment beyond the norm by doing an “El Rollo” (loop) in a plexiglas pipe. While there’s still much debate to this day whether he was successful or not (no video cameras), Duane met the challenge and what was done, was done.

In that same avante-garde spirit, but with cameras rolling from all angles, the ridiculous and insane Grand Canyon skate to BASE jump feat of Bob Burnquist will air next week on the Discovery Channel’s show, “Stunt Junkies”. The show times are listed here.

At a later date, the next skater to appear on the extreme stunt show will be Chad Shetler with the world’s highest wallride. It’s not quite a bank to wall situation, but rolling frontside beyond twelve feet of vert above a fifteen foot tranny is not the easiest of routes.

etnies Hires Another Brit

etnies is seemingly on its way to becoming the largest skateboard industry employer of the British outside of the UK, by fearlessly adding a Liverpudlian to its skate program!

Clifford Unsworth has been crowned etnies’ new skate team manager and, with accents flyin’ all over the place in here, he surely felt right at home upon arriving in the Brit-infested offices of Lake Forest, California.

As the first Brit to finagle his way into etnies more than 15 years ago, Don Brown, senior VP of marketing for Sole Technology, said, “After the French on-field thugism during the recent World Cup, I figured we need to hire some protection around here. Scousers are known for sucking out eyeballs, biting off ears, and using Stanley knives as their weapon of choice. Bring that Zidane headbutt on Pierre, we’re ready!”

Clifford knows the drill; we are confident in him and look forward to the fun and leadership he will bring to the etnies skateboard team. But as a Brit managing fellow Euros—a Finn, a Frenchman, a Dane and a Spaniard, to be specific – the biggest challenge may rely on his ability to ration at least some of the beer out to the American half of the team.

Bordertown Lifers Never Give Up

After feeling the ill effects of nearly a year of red tape, Josh Matlock with Tony Miorana and the rest of the skaters responsible for Oakland’s Bordertown skatepark are in the process of raising money and donations towards material costs, liability insurance fees and engineering plans required by the city to legally continue with their DIY dream.

Know of anyone that might be willing to donate their time or expertise in drawing up engineering plans to the cause? Let them know of this situation.

Never say die!

You’re Never Too Old to Loop

On Wednesday, August 2nd, one of skateboarding’s legends, Dave Hackett stepped up and manned up to successfully become the oldest member of skateboarding’s elite Loop Club during a small session at the Huck Jam ramp facility. When asked of his youthful feat done on a whim with few attempts, Hackett offered, “I hope that by me doing the loop at 45 years of age, will serve as an inspiration for all skaters to never stop riding, that you’re never too old, and to take care of your health, as it’s really our only wealth.” True. Congratulations!

Who’s next?
