X Games 12 Vert Best Trick
Last night’s Vert Best Trick contest was hyped as the evening in which the 1080 would be unleashed and landed by media darling Shaun White. The pressure was certainly on. After his 14th successive attempt, Shaun finally set one down on the wheels and his cadence was building. But, then came the buzzer, ending the 30 minute jam format event. However, Shaun ran back up to the deck and wasn’t ready to let up, you could see he was gaining momentum and confidence. He wanted to land it for himself, not for an award or cash and so did the crowd, but the power of live television took control and Shaun was told to wait for the cameras.
Unfortunately, he had to stand in frustration up on the deck for over five minutes and during that time he lost his energy and rhythm. When he was finally allowed to have another go, he slammed and it was over. Maybe in the near future, this elusive stunt will take place in a setting not geared for television ratings, just for the thrill of it…just like it used to be.

X Games 12 - Update and Vert Results
Yesterday’s events at X Games 12 produced some solid skating amongst the branding of anti perspirant, razors and shaving products, junk food, sugary soft drinks and the armed forces.
In the “Skateboard Street Selection Session”, 9 skaters made the cut from 19 and advanced to the finals to join last year’s gold medalist Paul Rodriguez. The finals take place today.
The dudes heading to the finals in qualifying order are:
Chris Cole, Greg Lutzka, Eric Koston, Billy Marks, Nyjah Huston, Andrew Reynolds, Ryan Sheckler, Jeremy Rogers, and Rodolpho Ramos.
On the massive vert ramp, both the women’s and men’s competitions took place with some of Brazil’s best landing up on the podium. I must point out that it was quite amusing to watch the host of extreme cameramen that followed every move of the Golden Boy looking for some big story. When he was chilling, or even just drinking water on the sidelines, he had a cameraman posted up in his ear. At all times…seriously!
Perhaps they will get their payoff with tonight’s Best Trick event. Is tonight the night of the 1080? Stay tuned….

What do you get when you mix two Canadian high school buddies and one super talented professional skateboarder at a park in East LA? You get this nice little scenario. What a big little circle we weave, eh?

Step 5. Be Cool
With the X-Games coming up this week as well as the Dew Tour moving through a town near you, about.com has decided to help everyone out and have created the online guide: How to Get Sponsored in Skateboarding.
Finally! All you kids out there listen up. You’ve heard the rumors, you’ve seen Slap’s One In Million contest…but here’s the real deal. Follow their six steps and you’ll be knee deep in sponsors in no time flat. Here are some highlights…
- “First off, you need to ride your skateboard.”
- “Try to find out who is in charge of skateboarding sponsorships, contact them, and get to know them.”
- “You will be representing these companies who will sponsor you, so take a look at the image that company has and make sure you match it. If the company is rough and hardcore, then they will want to sponsor people who look that way. If the company is fun and goofy, again, it will improve your chances to get sponsored in skateboarding if you match.”
- “It may take you a while to get sponsored in skateboarding - or it may take you no time at all.”
Maybe YOU can be in Tony Hawk’s next game! Good luck.

Battle Of The Sexes
Cara-Beth Burnside talks briefly with USA Today about the big gap in prize money and coverage when it comes to men vs. women in skateboarding.
“I just want what’s fair for the women. I want us to feel good about going to the Summer X Games and not feel embarrassed about the poor prize money or lack of coverage.”

It’s All in the Swoop?
Strange title for this fairly well done TIME magazine article about the evolution of skateparks. It’s nice to hear that skateparks have started to influence other designers and architects. and with mainstream articles like this hyping Dreamland, Team Pain and Grindline let’s hope the days of crappy non-skater designed parks are over.
