Caltrans Destroys San Diego DIY

The California Department of Transportation destroyed another great DIY spot this week – this time in San Diego a frequented spot called “Snatch Park.” CalTrans officials have been on a roll lately after knocking down an Oakland DIY zone a few weeks prior to Snatch’s recent death. Those who were fortunate enough to skate Snatch on a regular basis know that what Caltrans is doing isn’t fair, despite their excuses and reasons for liability. It’s sad that such a positive movement is looked at solely as a hazard and can even be deemed “illegal.”

“We were notified recently of a skate park that was built with wood and concrete in one of the drainage canals that parallels Interstate 8,” said Caltrans spokesman Ed Cartagena. “Accidents can happen, so in terms of exposure to liability, we try to limit that by making certain locations illegal to place things.”

In a world where everyone complains about money, taxes, etc., it’s not very comforting knowing that the peoples’ tax dollars are going towards things like destroying skate spots due to bogus excuses. All in all, the park will be missed, but new creative opportunities await. San Diego has a strong history in DIY (Washington St. skatepark speaks for itself), so the building will continue, and new cement will be poured. It’s only a matter of time.

R.I.P Snatch Park, you will be missed!
