Happy Birthday Burnside!

The grandfather skate zone of the modern skatepark revolution, Burnside skatepark turns 20 years old today. Although costumed celebrants from all over the planet make the pilgrimage annually to join in the party, this year marks a special and significant year of skating beneath Portland’s Burnside Bridge. The party kicks off at noon and will continue to roll all night.
Be there.

    C1RCA X Blockhead “Hardtimes” Shoe

C1RCA has released a collaborative “Hardtimes” shoe with the legendary skateboard company known as Blockhead. If you don’t happen to know much of this 80s brand or many of the formidable team riders that backed its effort back in the day, well kiddos, just Google that shit or jump on Youtube. It’s simple as that really.

Just as importantly, this limited edition skate shoe features one of Blockhead’s more recognizable and classic graphics from the artistic hand of Blockhead’s resident team rider and artist, Ron Cameron. Yes, hard times indeed, they were then and they are now (depending on what side of the fence you skate along).

Built upon the silhouette of C1RCA’s Hatchet (designed by Peter Ramondetta), this mid top style utilizes durable and sustainable hemp fibers on the upper with Blockhead artwork on the sides, tongue, and insoles of the shoe. Genuine vulcanized construction with FusionGrip™, and elastic tongue stays seal the deal.

Drop by your local skate retailer or online shop and check out this special offering along with many of the new shoes from C1RCA.

Beneath The Bridge – 20 Years Deep at Burnside

With Halloween coming up real quick, the dingy, yet prominent region beneath the eastern side of Portland, Oregon’s Burnside Bridge has been seeing quite a bit of activity in recent days.

Specifically, as Burnside Skatepark marks its 20th anniversary celebration this Sunday, co-conspirators and two of several original masterminds of the self-made skate zone, Mark “Red” Scott, and Sage Bolyard have been busy constructing a new addition for the event. The work with many of park’s locals also involved, isn’t so pretty, but in the true renegade spirit of all that Burnside was originally built upon two decades ago, that’s absolutely the way it should be – DIY, dirty, gritty, unique, unrefined, but highly functional…built by skaters.

Yes, the crude and aging godfather of skateparks that helped to pave the way for the modern skatepark revolution is getting another face lift or offshoot if you will. Last year it was the addition of the escalating rainbow rail, this year it’s all about the aforementioned tightly bowled capsule pocket. The cinderblocks are stacked and mortared and much of the framework and fill material is in place. With mud being shot later this week, it looks like Sunday’s Halloween costumed celebrants will be on tap for wild rides and new lines once the concrete cures.

As customary with the park’s yearly birthday party tradition, resident artist Jay Meer has once again given the entire park a fresh base coat of paint and has begun decorating areas of the park. At the moment, Pac Man themed details and other pieces of artwork have begun to emerge on the transitions throughout the area under the bridge and its supports. A spiraled swirl of red painted stripes now livens up the pool below the street surface. As the city sleeps, Meer’s work continues long into the nights leading up to Hallows eve, for this year will be a celebration for a definitive cultural revolution and an earmarked birthday for a world renowned skate spot. Burnside Skatepark – twenty years deep – and the full-tilt boogie continues. Wow, time sure does fly.
