Nike SB ICONxICON Site Launched

Nike SB has just launched its ICONxICON mini-site backed with a visual history lesson to highlight its latest skate shoes customized and endorsed by Eric Koston and Brian Anderson. The site also contains video interviews with BA and Koston and their respective shoes, additional video footage, a photo gallery, and more.

I know Nike controls, and perhaps deservedly so, most of the skate industry, but do they need to re-write history? Their website states, “1985 [The Dunk] becomes a favorite amongst skaters looking for an alternative to the low-top skate shoes of the day.” In 1985, the only skate shoes were Vans style #95 and #38–almost everyone then wore either high-top Chuck Taylors or Vans Hi-tops. The low-top Vans “Old Skools” weren’t even sold then. Dunks weren’t nearly as popular as Jordan 1s, certainly not in ‘85, at least.
Nikes were never skate shoes. In fact they were the opposite.
Nikes were for jocks.
Somehow Nike found a way to shoehorn themselves into the skateboarding scene and are now taking over.
That’s your true history lesson for the day.
you’re hating. period. Im east coast for 20+ and I can tell you Nike has been here for always. My archive goes back to ‘79 and look… heres a cover skateboarder Aug v6 iss 1 BLAZERS.
All the hate is LAME. go skate and learn the real hist. the hard way, on board.
as far as Nike running skateboarding. I cant find any ad. pre 2000. so _ thats that.
BA and Frosty are the most legit skateboarders out. And noboby can steal that kind of thunder
I was only disputing one fact on Nike’s history timeline. I can only think of three actual skate shoes you could buy in 1985–Vans #95, Vans #38, and (oldstock of) the Hobie skateshoe. Only one of those was a low-top and most people were skating the hi-top. Not only was I skating then, but from every single Thrasher in 1985, there are only two pictures (besides two reprints from the ’70s) of people skating in low-tops.
And when you say Nike has been here “always”, you mean people were buying them. No one will dispute the fact that skaters were wearing non-skate shoes when the skate shoe market was almost non-existent. But not one skateshop from the ’70s to at least the “Choad” era had a Nike account.
Also by “control[ling]” the skate industry, I mean that Nike has the largest market share for the biggest retail item in skateboarding. This is now, not ten years ago. Perhaps I should have said, “makes the most money from skateboarding and holds the largest distribution channels.” “Control” sounds kind of harsh. Sorry for the hate.
wow! I totally get it now. Thanks for claification. Im not trying to be hater police either, I am trying to change some stripes of my own.
A friend recently pointed out how hateful I had become.
dude you sound like a fellow vet. Lets talk some more sometime!
these shoes hurt my feet. I literally tried 4 pairs, and returned them all. too narrow, bitch shoes
The Dunk SB is probably, pound for pound, the best skate shoe out there…for me. That being said, skate what you want. They’re your feet and your political views.
I would love to move to a public school just so I don’t have to wear uniform.
