Skating In Afghanistan

“We skate because we want to lose our fear, and to gain courage and to be healthy.” Wow. The New York Times has just published a very moving piece covering skateboarding in Afghanistan. The story tells the story of Oliver Percovich an Australian who started the first story school in the country, Skateistan, and who is working to build a larger skatepark. Be sure and watch the 6 minute video as well.
The next time you bitch about a lack of spots or an old board think about dodging bullets, suicide bombers and class war. Inspiring stuff that illustrates the power of skating and certainly puts things in perspective.
