The New York Times has posted a piece that highlighting ’skaters finding a surplus of deserted pools in which to perfect their acrobatic aerials’. It seems that the economic downturn is producing ’smiles as wide as a half-pipe’ on some skaters. This is certainly an interesting read…the idea of the New York Times reporting on outlaw pool skating is something few could have predicted.

Little Giants Volume One: Don Pendleton
Posted by bk - December 26th, 2008 10:04 am
Initially released this past summer, the first volume of the Little Giants series chronicles and highlights Don Pendleton’s love for skateboarding, artistic beginnings in Ravenswood, West Virginia, and renowned graphic design work primarily within the circles of skateboarding. For those not very familiar of his work, Pendleton’s clean and unique graphic style helped to establish and grow the allure and brand of Alien Workshop for the greater part of the past decade. In recent years he has produced striking graphics for Element and his own line of clothing called Darkroom while remaining in Dayton, Ohio. Yes, Pendleton refuses to give in to the notion that one must move out west to California to make living in the skateboarding industry. Good for him and others that feel the same way.
From start to finish, this DVD which was produced, directed and narrated by Bob Kronbauer, delivers 28 minutes of documental footage packed with archival clips and insightful interviews and commentary with Pendleton, his friends and skate industry peers. Many of those which appear in this video include Jeremy Fish, Craig Metzger, Michael Leon, Jeff Dickson, Joe Castrucci, Kevin Wilkins, Matt Irving, Tony Larson, Steve Berra, Rick McCrank, Geoff McFetridge, Eric Stricker, and Tim O’Connor.
All in all, this first installment of the Little Giants series kicks off a fresh, appreciated and refreshing look into the creative minds and lives of those that contribute to the fabric, culture and lifestyle of skateboarding. Look for the second release of Little Giants featuring Michael Leon at the beginning of 2009. Solid stuff…well worth the purchase.
