Focus Mag’s “Rise and Shine” DVD
Posted by bk - May 29th, 2008 11:46 am
Over the years we’ve often heard the phrase in skateboarding, “East Coast Represent!” and unless you’ve traveled to the roughness of skate spots and lived through the harsh winter months of the eastern states you probably have no clue regarding these words or the pride instilled in the skaters out there. Straight up, it’s tough to rise and shine as a skater out east with the brutality of weather delivered by mother nature. Truly, you can throw your California comforts out the window!
Well, the East’s Focus Magazine has released its skate video, Rise and Shine and dropped us a copy to check out and you can feel that pride and dedication through and through. The video opens up with a solid tribute to John Pildis (who was skating and got hit by a truck and lost the use of his legs) and features sick spots and 37 minutes of footage with the rising talents of Tom Asta, Kyle Frederick, Drew Windon, Zack Funk, Austin Kanfoush, Bill Sands, and Kyle Nicholson. Several montages round out the visual brilliance with stops in Florida, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, New York, Philly, and the NJ/Red Bull Tour. Backed by a great selection of music, creative intros and overall art direction, Rise and Shine delivers the cinematic goods and lives up to its title.
Help support East Coast skateboarding and purchase this DVD. It is available though Focus mag’s online store or ask for it at your local skate shop. Hats off and high fives to all of those involved with this effort!

Profitteering the Hype
Posted by bk - May 28th, 2008 1:52 pm
Today MTV Networks and NBC Sports have announced a huge, wide ranging, strategic partnership to expand the AST Dew Tour going forward.
From the press release: “As part of the MTV Networks/NBC Universal alliance around the AST, MTV and MTV2 will provide lifestyle programming, targeted cross-promotion, multi-platform content and distribution, consumer products licensing and merchandising to the joint venture.”
With this announcement, remember you have the choice and right to eat up these commoditized products and hype (MTV board graphics anyone?) or continue to support the “real deal” skate companies and skate shops from which skateboarding has emerged over the years. Let’s not forget the Cowtowns, Pitcrews, FTCs, Familias, Skateworks, Nocturnals, MIAs, NJ Skateshops and others dedicated with deep-seated involvement and love for skateboarding huh?
