Another DIY Skatepark Meets Approval From the Suits
Posted by bk - September 29th, 2005 11:19 pm
Late last week, Dan Barnett, Tim Demmon, Shawn Bishop and others responsible for the beginnings of a covert skatepark beneath Seattle’s Highway 99 at Marginal Way had received a letter of approval from the Seattle Department of Transportation. This favorable development doesn’t necessarily signify that the skatepark will remain there indefinitely, but it’s a sound step in the right direction towards working out a long term arrangement.
UPDATE: In similar news, the city of Oakland has officially signed a lease agreement with Cal Trans on behalf of the Bordertown skatepark project.

Skate Shoes, Big Business

According to this article in the San Diego Union Tribune, skate shoe sales outpaced all other athletic shoes in sales last year. It seems this is due to the large amount of kids NOT skating. “The 14-year-old kid who doesn’t ride a skateboard still wants to look like a skateboarder,” said Ed Dominick, president of Vox Footwear in Encinitas. “Skate shoe sales reached $1.5 billion last year, with 24 million pairs sold, a Board-Trac study found.”
Hawk’s New Helmet Cam
Posted by Chris - September 29th, 2005 7:31 am
Just when you thought he couldn’t endorse anything else, Digital Blue has just released a Tony Hawk signature helmet cam. No, we’re not kidding. Strap the thing onto your head or helmet and capture 40 minutes of digital footage on a 32 MB memory card. We shutter to think about the number of terrible Quicktime videos about to hit the web. Thanks Tony.
Ams Getting Paid Results
Posted by bk - September 28th, 2005 9:36 am
Last weekend’s Am Getting Paid contest at Montreal’s Orkus skatepark birthed a new paradigm to the skateboard industry. Yes, ams getting financially rewarded for their efforts in a public setting. We’re not so sure about this…what categorizes a pro vs an amateur?
Anyhow, after the rails, ledges and transitions of the street course had been attacked by all 140+ skaters, the top ten pre-teens and upstarts to pocket cash looked like this:
1) Nyjah Huston $5000
2) Jordan Hoffart $2500
3) Thomas Parent $1750
4) Torey Pudwill $600
5) Lee Yankou $300
6) Antonie Asselin $150
7) Curtis Colamonico $50
Collin Hale $50
9) Erik Lemay $50
10) Will Cristofaro $50
Damn, by the looks of it, the awards dinero was healthier than the professional purses during the early 90s. We’ve come a long way huh?

Hello Kokomo
Posted by bk - September 28th, 2005 8:37 am
This Saturday, October 1st two of skating’s legendary heavyweights, Steve Caballero and Salman Agah will be mixing it up with the kids in Kokomo, Indiana. The dynamic duo will be on site for a grand opening skate demo for the newly constructed skatepark there. This Grindline brainstorm features a first-ever elbowed full pipe within its design.
It’s great to see ambitious and creative designs beautifully fixed into concrete for the present and future skate generations. We certainly could use a few in California. Wormhoudt are you listening?
