Pharrell Teams Up With Tony Hawk

Going beyond his new Ice Cream skate brand, rapper producer Pharrell is set to team up with Tony Hawk to encourage black, inner-city kids to get into skating. “Hawk is convinced black youths have steered well clear of skateboarding in the past because they associated the sport with spoiled white kids.”

    S-ONE Helmets

It’s about comfort. You can’t have a helmet that doesn’t fit right…it just won’t work. Well, it’s also about looks. Helmets can be lame enough, but if you have a cheesy futuristic bike helmet looking one? Forget it. All right, the bottom line is that some parks force you to wear these things and you don’t want your brains all over the flat bottom, so most skaters have to have one. It’s about protection. You’ve got to have a helmet in some cases…why not make it a good one.
Enter S-ONE. They make some great helmets that won’t break the bank or make you look like a freak. Their ‘Damager’ model looks like an old style skate helmet. It sits low on your head and fits snug. After spending a weekend under one it’s safe to say that it does the job and does it well. Although our ‘Damager’ wasn’t CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) rated, S-ONE makes a version that is, as well as a few other models that are even beefier. They also make knee pads, elbow pads, and skater designed wrist guards and ankle supports.
Sometimes you need protection. S-ONE delivers for skaters by skaters.

    More Start Ups

Former H-Street pro and 11-year employee of DC Shoes, Steve Ortega, has started his own “skateboard only” apparel line called Gnome.
There’s a new skate publication soon to hit the streets truly dedicated to the skaters, skate spots and flavor of all that is regarded as East Coast. Found only in skateboard shops and parks and not grocery stores and shopping malls, Focus Skateboarding Magazine plans to represent those who skate tough, far from the considerably mild climates of California.
